It’s 5:07am on a SATURDAY and I am awake. Without alarm assistance.
That in itself is a “miracle”, but I’m hopeful it will become a long lasting habit. I’m up bright and early this morning to put the principles of an author in the USA, Hal Elrod, and his idea of the “Miracle Morning” into place.
Hal doesn’t have “make yourself a cup of coffee” on his list of principles to apply – but I have one in my hand, mostly because it’s my current morning habit. (One I’d like to swap for a more healthy herbal tea)
Hal has an acronym in place to jog your memory as to what to practice in this morning routine. He calls them Life S.A.V.E.R.S. (silence, affirmations, visualisation, exercise, reading and scribing)
The catalyst for me wanting to investigate this morning routine, was my friend Paul. Paul and I met at university where we were both studying teaching twenty years ago. Although we don’t live close to each other, our paths have crossed from time to time during those years.
Twenty years ago, we still had blackboards in our classrooms, and Paul was able to produce the most beautiful chalk artwork on his blackboard. (As opposed to my slightly downward sloping script…)
So – Paul has a gift for hand drawn lettering…and we’ll come back to that in a moment.
Two years ago, Paul read The Miracle Morning, and said that it transformed his mornings. He personalised the daily routine to suit him, and joined the Miracle Morning Community on Facebook.
A component of the daily routine that many, including him, seemed to be uncertain about, were the words of affirmation. People would post inspirational quotes in the Facebook community to offer examples. Paul repeated some of these in his journal for several days in a row, re-writing them each morning. As he pondered the words, he found it helpful to play with the words on the page. Instead of just writing them down, he started to draw them in his journal.
This led to him sharing his work in the Facebook community. People liked his art…and asked for more.
Paul enjoyed making the art, and it was becoming a part of his morning rhythm, and seemed to be helping others too. One of Hal Elrod’s team was monitoring the Facebook community and thanked Paul for what he’d been generously giving and asked if he’d consider working with them on a project idea they were considering. Numerous people had commented that Paul should make a colouring in book, and Hal Elrod, seeing what he was contributing and how many people were buzzing about it, decided that he should be the illustrator for the Miracle Morning colouring book. And now he is!
